Lover's Leap Tea Estate

Lovers Leap Tea Estate is not an independent tea factory but a division of Pedro Tea Estate. While the tea fields are managed there, all processes related to tea production are carried out at Pedro Tea Estate's main factory. On the premises is the "Lovers Leap Waterfall," and the tragic tale of lovers associated with this waterfall is the origin of the tea estate's name. Long ago, a prince from Kandy fell in love with a village girl of low birth. However, his father, the king, forbade their union. The sad story goes that while fleeing from pursuers, the two lovers threw themselves from the rocks of this waterfall, vowing eternal love. There is also a legend that the spirits of the lovers appear at night. Pedro Tea Estate ships tea under the name "Mahagastotte" in addition to Lovers Leap. Both are representative selling marks of Nuwara Eliya. Established around 1840, tea production fully began in 1870. Currently, these teas are produced in a vast tea estate covering approximately 544 hectares. It also features a visitor center for general tourists, making it one of the most well-known tea estates in the Nuwara Eliya region.

Nuwara Eliya is known as "Little England" because of the annual average temperature of 16 degrees Celsius in Sri Lanka, which is an everlasting summer. Even now, the townscape that retains the atmosphere of the time, such as British-style buildings, racetracks, botanical gardens, and clubhouses, is a tourist destination that Sri Lankans long for. The amount of tea produced in such a plateau is never large, and it is only about 1.5% of the whole Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya has a quality season from January to February. The black tea, which blends the scent of green leaves with the bright orange light blue, is called "Ceylon tea champagne."
